After All
Guy Avital
"The most projecting aspects in Avital's current exhibition, namely the energetic outburst that seems to surge from his canvases and engulf the viewer.
On the face of it, this energetic outburst owes to the hefty brushstrokes peculiar to Avital's work, and now made all the more evident through the mostly monochromatic palette of After All. The stark colors that characterized his previous work have given way to shades of black, grey and white – a limited palette which, rather than pacify the vortex that arises from this clash of brushstrokes, stimulates it further. The wide range of curved shapes that figure in his works – suggestive of crow wings, palm branches, a towering dust cloud or a breaking wave – also contributes to this feeling we have, that their contents are about to overflow and break the limits of the canvas. But above all, it is Avital's reiteration of the cubist task of presenting painting at once at its flattest and deepest which accounts for their unique volume and landscape."
